About
Known as one of the southeastern United States’ premier portrait artists, Mary Bainton Bliss has been creating compelling and strikingly lifelike portraits for more than twenty-five years. Her works in oil, watercolor, and colored pencil are distinguished by an ability to capture the essence of a subject’s character as well as an accurate likeness of features. Her faithful rendering of details is a hallmark of each meticulously executed piece. Ms. Bliss’ subjects include corporate executives, children, university presidents in full regalia, family groupings, brides, debutantes, hunters, pets and more.
MY PROCESS
Based in Columbia, South Carolina, Ms. Bliss paints primarily from photos with an occasional brief sitting. Prior to beginning a portrait, the artist discusses pose, composition, and other appropriate details with the client. She then completes the painting in her studio using only the highest quality, professional grade materials. Client input is welcomed throughout the process. The finished picture is delivered by the artist or shipped, depending on the circumstances. Clients are accepted on a first come first serve basis with most orders being completed within several months.
Portrait prices depend on a number of variables such as how much of the figure is to be painted (head and shoulders, three-quarter figure or full figure) and the number of figures included. A thirty percent non-refundable deposit is required for work to begin. The remainder is due upon completion of the portrait.
